What are feeds? I see "RSS", "XML", and "Atom" out there, but I don't know how I might use these links when I find them.
Feeds are a way for websites large and small to distribute their content well beyond just visitors using browsers. Feeds permit subscription to regular updates, delivered automatically via a web portal, news reader, or in some cases good old email. Feeds also make it possible for site content to be packaged into "widgets," "gadgets," mobile devices, and other bite-sized technologies that make it possible to display blogs, podcasts, and major news/sports/weather/whatever headlines just about anywhere.
Why is This a Good Thing?
Subscribing to feeds makes it possible to review a large amount of online content in a very short time. Feeds permit instant distribution of content and the ability to make it "subscribable." Advertising in feeds overcomes many of the shortcomings that traditional marketing channels encounter including spam filters, delayed distribution, search engine rankings, and general inbox noise.
How do I read feeds?
If you want to browse and subscribe to feeds, you have many choices. Today, there are more than 2,000 different feed reading applications, also known as "news aggregators" (for text, mostly) or "podcatchers" (for podcasts). There are even readers that work exclusively on mobile devices. Some require a small purchase price but are tops for ease-of-use and ship with dozens of feeds pre-loaded so you can explore the feed "universe" right away. Free readers are available as well; a search for "Feed reader" or "Feed aggregator" at popular search sites will yield many results. A handful of popular feed readers are listed at the bottom of this page. A typical interface for a feed reader will display your feeds and the number of new (unread) entries within each of those feeds. You can also organize your feeds into categories and even clip and save your favorite entries (with certain applications). If you prefer, you can use an online, web-based service to track and manage feeds. Online services give you the advantage of being able to access your feed updates anywhere you can find a web browser. Also, upgrades and new features are added automatically.
Columbus, OH – On Friday, June 19, 2009, at 9:30 a.m., State Senator Karen Gillmor (R-Tiffin) and representatives of the Ohio Farm Bureau Federation, the Ohio Soybean Council, the Ohio Corngrowers Association and the Ohio Bioproducts Innovation Center (OBIC) will officially kickoff their campaign to promote expanded use of commercial and industrial products composed from biological products, including renewable agricultural materials, like plant, animal and marine materials, or forestry materials. Not only are these products environmentally friendly, but also provide a growing market for Ohio agriculture.
Ross O. Youngs, inventor and CEO of Univenture, Inc., will be on hand to provide examples of his environmentally friendly packaging materials, made from agricultural products and in Marysville, Ohio. Many other companies in Ohio are also leading the way in bioproducts development and marketing, including Battelle, who will also have a representative at Friday’s event.
All participants support Senate Bill 131, legislation recently introduced by Senator Gillmor that would implement a purchasing preference program in Ohio, similar to the federal BioPreferred Products Program, for the acquisition of supplies by government agencies. Gillmor provided sponsor testimony on SB 131 before the Senate Agriculture Committee this morning.

Senator Gillmor provides sponsor testimony before the Senate Agriculture Committee on SB 131. As an example of a bio-based product her legislation works to promote, Senator Gillmor is holding a soy-based lubricant, similar to WD-40, that is made right here in Ohio.
The U.S. Department of Energy, Office of Energy Efficiency and Renewable Energy (EERE) Office of the Biomass Program conducted an Algal Biofuels Technology Roadmap Workshop on December 9-10 at University of Maryland, Inn and Conference Center.
The format followed similar roadmap workshops conducted by the Department of Energy in order to bring together various parties mostly consisting of researchers from national labs and universities along with some companies involved in development and commercialization. This format consisted of presentations and breakout sessions designed to directly engage the participants in order to provide a consolidation of knowledge. The Department of Energy, using their labs NREL and Sandia, will then write the Roadmap draft document and provide a geographic resource model of algal growth based on a number of factors. Ross Youngs and Jim Cook were among the 700 attendees, representing more than 12 countries, who came together to discuss algae’s future in renewable energy. This record group of algae producers, scientists, investors and policy-makers left the meeting with the new ideas, partnerships and renewed vigor for developing the algae industry. Other attendees from Ohio included Dr. Ben Stuart from Ohio University and Dr. Joanne Belovich from Cleveland State University.
Many of the world’s leading scientists, technologists and process engineers shared data, findings and conclusions from their testing, projects and studies. Others shared innovative ideas, insights and opinions about technology, business, and the industry. The meeting also provided an open forum to discuss successes, challenges and to make recommendations for moving the industry forward.
The summit also provided great opportunities for business networking. Not only was there ample time built into the event, the caliber of the participants and the range of attendees across the spectrum of the industry were tremendous. The conference was extremely productive for business connections that could lead to future collaborations. It was definitely a benchmark meeting in the algae industry and our attendance is bound to help our national standing.
July 24 – The Van Wert County Department of Economic Development hosted a two hour seminar featuring presentations by AlgaeVS’s Ross Youngs, Dr. Joseph Hager of EMTEC, and Ron Erd of Independence Bio Products.
The room was filled to capacity with attendees from across the State of Ohio as Nancy Bowen, Van Wert Economic Development Director, introduced the panel and moderated the event.

July 23 – PolymerOhio Emerging Technology Forum. Ross discussed the market forces driving bio-products including bio-plastics for packaging, the markets, customers, and products along with the requirements for success in the sustainable plastic arena. July 21 – Following a Union County press conference at the Economic Development office, Ross discussed AlgaeVenture Systems personally with Senator Voinovich.
